I have just gotten the final word that my short story, Across the Sea, has sold to Derwin Mak and Eric Choi's anthology, The Dragon and the Stars. My Clarion West class almost had a clean sweep, but alas, Samantha Ling's story was not included in the final cut. The last time this happened to her, she sold the story to Asimov's and received an honorable mention in The Year's Best Science Fiction, so I'm not too concerned about her finding a home for her current story. The other classmate of mine who submitted is Susan Ee.
Random funny story. Waaaay back in 2000 when we all applied for the Clarion West class of 2001, Samantha Ling was one of the first people admitted. On the listserv of accepted members, she wrote that she hoped her race hadn't been a factor, for science fiction has a reputation for being dominated by whites. Susan Ee and I were accepted a short time later, torpedoing that theory. It would've been cool for the three of us to share a table of contents, but there'll be other chances.
My life for the next month will be consumed by a moving frenzy, though. While driving home from seeing my new nephew, I got news that our house sold. This new realtor of ours listed the house Monday, did the first showing Wednesday, presented us an offer Wednesday, and got our counteroffer accepted by the buyer today. If it all goes through, we will close in two weeks.
We took a substantial loss, but that's how the market is. We'll be paying off part of the mortgage and all of the realtor fees out of savings, but this realtor earned every penny and we're quite happy to write her the check.
While visiting my sister, though, I did something to my back. I'm not sure what. It just really hurts. It may or may not have something to do with carting around my 22 pound son and all his accessories, but if it means I can't do a ton of heavy lifting in the move, I'm okay with that.

ReplyDeleteAccording to the New England Journal of Medicine, the best way to rest up your back is for you to relax on your couch with a cold beverage and type away at your next WIP, while your husband runs around lifting heavy moving boxes.
