Hospital stay

Just a quick note to update everyone. I spent the last week in the hospital because my baby was still breach and they didn't want me to stray very far in case I went into labor. So I was kept there for six days, and was released today after he rotated head down. It was mainly boring, not terribly scary, and the reason we didn't see it coming was because of a difference in British/American dialects. We were warned that I might have to "come in" if the baby didn't rotate. We now know that in British English this means to be admitted overnight - not something that is the case in American English.

I'll post any and all updates regarding this sort of thing to my blog and propagate them on Facebook and Twitter. Please understand that I can't respond to everyone's individual requests for information. That that just isn't realistic while I'm about to give birth to a child. I love you all, but something would be wrong with me if you were my top priority under the circumstances.

I did finish my YA novel while I was in the hospital. What else do you do when you've got no internet and no sleep meds and are thus up all night? Nothing like typing away at 2am. The nurses, at least, seemed quite impressed with me. Everyone knows a bunch of people who claim to be writers, but seeing me actually complete edits in my hospital bed seemed to give me some authenticity in their eyes. Trevor was wonderfully kind enough to send it in to the acquisitions editor at Shadow Mountain for me, so I made my self imposed deadline!

  1. Congratulations on finishing the novel, and I hope it gets accepted. You're right that there isn't very much to do in a hospital. (I always brought in a stack of books.) I'm so glad the baby turned, too, and I hope the birth goes well for you.

  2. Hi Melanie, and thanks! Hope you don't have a ton of experience with hospital stays, but if you do, I know how that goes. This is the longest I've been in for decades, though, and yeah, it doesn't get any less boring. I had books, and watched a lot of really bad television :-)

  3. Responding to individual update requests isn't reasonable?!? Where ARE your priorities? ;)

  4. Bringing new life into the world and hugging a very cute 20 month old. If you saw how cute my 20 month old is, you'd understand at once ;-)

  5. The nurses aren't the only ones who "seem quite impressed" with you!

  6. Thanks, Diane :-) Speaking of strong, impressive women, I hope Alan is recovering well from his surgery. Sounds like they're asking you to do a lot to keep him off his feet.
